Scottish minimum alcohol pricing passed by... →
Alcohol minimum pricing has passed in Scotland. Changing rules that affects almost everybody, to try to change the habits of the few. If it passed here, not one person I know would change their drinking habits, they would make savings in other areas - like on food - to accommodate the change. We need to tackle the real problem, of why people drink to excess, not just try to price them out of it.

(Imaginary) Fears Tesco would 'destroy' Pontcanna
I love this story, which was published on WalesOnline yesterday. People are now so afraid of Tesco that as soon as a shop closes down, they start protesting and imagining what it would do to the area - even when Tesco have denied that they are even looking to move into the area!
Talk about creating your own news… How about asking shopkeepers and the local councillors, while you’re at...

If you can't beat them, buy them. Amazon to buy...
In typical massive corporation fashion, Amazon have today announced their intention to buy The Book Depository, a humble rooted book seller based out of Gloucester.
The Book Depository has a very faithful customer base, me included, because of their great customer service, free delivery, competitive pricing and their “independent bookshop” feel.
It’s a shame that this should...

Second disaster recovery #Fail, bye bye @RedGate
Some of you may have seen my tweets over the weekend about having fun, fun, fun spending many hours of my weekend doing prep work on a SAN to get it ready for a new database - up until 5am on Saturday morning, whoosh, I do enjoy it - kinda.
Anyway, so that all went to plan - almost, save for being a few hours out because a process took 19 hours instead of the estimated 10 hours, but nevermind.

Great, I can be in Bangor 9 minutes quicker...
So, at a time when we have no money to keep open day centres for the mentally incapable, amongst other things, it seems as though the WAG has enough to spend on taking 9 minutes off the journey from Cardiff and Holyhead.
The Welsh government will fund a new train service that will do a round-trip once a day until December, at a cost of £620,000.
Add to that the millions of pounds that are spent...

I was thinking the other day how weird it is that all of the weird, fucked up, passive aggressive, mental, derogatory, happy, sad, just plain odd, monkey talk that used to only go on in my brain - and if I ever told anybody they would often say “You’re fucking weird and possibly losing it, man” - is now coming out on a whim every day for the whole world to see, on Twitter.

It’s not just true of America, it’s true in the UK too (and possibly further) - the general consensus amongst the masses is - if you go to university you will never be out of work. And this just isn’t true.

Newry bomb alert: device left 'substantial' →
“On Friday morning, cones blocking the underpass were removed and hundreds of motorists drove past the van.”
So they left a van with a bomb in it guarded purely by cones? I think that’s more of a “blatant disregard for safety”, don’t you?

Cardiff burger conquest: The list so far
About 10 months ago I started a quest to find the best burger in Cardiff. It began pretty heavy, I was eating 2 or 3 a week, but since has subsided as I try to get around just about everywhere.
Now, I think I’m ready to start writing it up, but I want to check that I have done everywhere that is worth doing, so here is the list so far:

Suggestion: Cardiff Council should "crowdsource",...
The city and county of Cardiff has 324,800 residents (2008, estimated by NSfW) - initiatives like the “Central Business District” that was announced yesterday will affect the lives of quite a large proportion of those people.

Rail electrification is going to happen - and I’m pleased, this is a positive thing. 20 minutes doesn’t sound like a very long time, and it isn’t - but it is, for commuters like me it accumulates, that’s 40 minutes a day, 3 hours 33 minutes a week, 13 hours a month or 6.6 days per year if you’re travelling every day.
So what am I going to moan about this time, you...

I’m not a staunch “No for Wales” supporter - I’ve not “joined the campaign” or anything (mostly because I hate politics and politicians and believe that they’re all conniving bastards, even when they seem to have the same view as I do), it’s just that in the 10 years that Wales has had devolution I’m still not convinced - and so far during this...

Local blog @YourCardiff has managed to dig up Cardiff’s biggest morons and wheel them out for an article on the new wind turbine that has gone up in Wentloog.

What Lotus-Renault should do now
I have never written about Formula One on a blog before, despite having followed the sport avidly for 15 years.
I have decided to now because yesterday one of the greatest stars, a future world champion, was badly injured in a rally accident and looks to be out for almost certainly the entire season - which has not even started yet.
Lotus-Renault, as they are now called, looked to have a good...

Why I think "Viva Hate" is the best debut album...
It’s because I can imagine buying the album - fresh, crisp and new - unheard - putting it on for the first time and the music starting, “Alsatian Cousin”; a new beginning, a phenomenally strong track which was Morrissey truly announcing “WORLD, I AM HERE”.
If only I were 10 years younger, I would have been able to experience this for myself instead of having to...
